ZWART - For the first edition of the bi-annual festival REFRESH Amsterdam (initiated by the Amsterdam Museum), United Painting did a serie of temporary interventions in the form of statement carpets, made in collaboration with the festival’s partners. The interventions were one of the few events that could actually continue, while cultural (and social) life came to an halt due to the COVID pandemic and its lockdowns. ZWART was the first statement made in the serie and painted in the week leading up to the opening of the festival on 11th of December 2020. The word, chosen in support of the broadcasting network Omroep Zwart, carries a lot of unnecessary negative connotations, in response the statement functioned as a dissenting voice. In freezing temperatures our crew, Amsterdam Museum employees and friends worked in the old courtyard of the former City Orphanage (Burgerweeshuis). The piece was created in a collaborative effort and designed-on-the-spot by the participants themselves, using a set of stencils and a palet of three colours. The patterns and colors visually blend, lifting the statement out of the background and into a colourful final result.
MUSEUM - A statement selected by OSCAM and specifically for OSCAM Director Marian Duff’s research into the meaning and redefinition of the word. The Piece was painted by Young OSCAM, the united painting crew and friends in front of the museum in Amsterdamse Poort.
ARTIVISM/ACTIVISM - When asked which word they wanted to paint, our friends at the Compagnietheater in Amsterdam they couldn’t decide between ARTIVISM and ACTIVISM. Because we could borrow the ART from the first statement (ZWART), we added a letter C to also create the word ACTIVISM. ARTIVISM is the call for specifically using creative expression to cultivate social change. We spent a week working with them on the letters, spread out in the unused entrance hall of the theater, in the middle of the Spring lockdown, May 2021. The piece was created in a collaborative effort and designed-on-the-spot by the participants themselves, consisting of our crew and Compagnietheater empolyees, using a set of stencils and a palet of three colours. The patterns and colors visually blend, lifting the statement out of the background and into a colourful final result.
